Electives are where you can really get into the meat of what you want to do with your business. Of course, some electives are skills that can be used in many venues, like typing, but here is where you can take courses to learn your specialty, too
Any Business Course
Most business courses, “how to start a home business” course, or courses listed under ‘Online Business Courses” in our Library are good to great choices. I haven’t seen too much curriculum offered to homeschoolers that cover this subject, which is why we do this site!
NFTE’s How to Start and Operate a Small Business
Written as a textbook for public school, it converts easily for use as a homeschool business course. Covering everything from “Do You Have What It Takes to Become an Entrepreneur?” to “Choosing an Exit Strategy”, it’s far more engaging and interesting than any other business textbook we have used. In fact, this is one of the main texts we use to teach our online class.
Extremely well organized, it's broken down into 3 major sections, and lends itself
easily to expansion if time is available. The author recommends a 100-
Courses to Expand Your Expertise
Take an online course learning a trade they can start a business with. For instance, when my son was 13 he loved to fix things, so he took an online “Small Engine Repair” course from Penn Foster* and did quite a good business for the next few years repairing lawnmowers. He paid for the course out of his earnings, and it’s tax deductible! It was funny, more than once we would go out to the garage on a Saturday morning and there would be a mower with a note on it asking to be fixed! Sometimes I think my son got more business just because he was easy to deal with.
Our other son took a course on how to be a personal trainer because he was very interested in sports. We always encouraged looking to your interests to find your vocation, and while he didn’t make much as a personal trainer, his athletic interests was part of what earned him a full scholarship to a top Christian college!
Computer and Internet Courses
Computer courses abound online and we will be posting everything we find, so sign up for our free updates! In our Library is a listing of online courses, and there are a few offered by homeschool curriculum companies. Be careful, many of these courses are dated, and as fast as the internet is moving, the knowledge becomes obsolete FAST!
There are many courses that teach via video how to use some of the more popular web building programs like Dreamweaver. Some of these can be pricey, but there are ways you can develop your own classes with the many free open source programs. More to come on this. (Sign up for updates!)
