There are two ways to go about blogging for profit:

Just a School Project

Naturally, everyone would like to make a little money, or even a lot of money, but it does get much more complicated when blogging for profit is pursued. If your child is younger, and you simply want him to get some safe computing exposure and have a little fun doing it, this is where you start.

First, you will want to decide on what subject you want to write about. You can choose something for fun, like

Webkinz or Funniest Hairdo’s Ever, or Everything Pizza, or Soccer, or.... something a little more educational, like Everything About. . (our town or state), Snakes, Different Churches and what they believe, Best books written by African-American Women. One blog I saw was all about Worms  (worms.com)! You could take a subject you are studying, or something you are really interested in. Remember, blogs are usually long term projects, so choose accordingly.

Second, sign up for a free blog on Blogger.com or Wordpress.com.. When you sign up, they will ask you what you are naming your blog. They will tell you if that name is taken already, but try to keep the name close to what the blog is about.

Once your blog is ready to go, you will need to take some time to learn how it works and make it look as nice as you can. That’s the fun part. If you have trouble with any of the technical issues, search for a ‘how-to’ video, they are increasing daily.

Be Consistent in Writing!

You will need to post in your blog at least once a week, every day is even better-especially at first. Some people write several blogs in one day, then post them one at a time to keep it regular.

If You Are Blogging For Profit-

You will want to read all of the above, but you

do not want to start with a free blogging program.

There are two reasons for this;

1) Blogs build up traffic over time, and traffic = money. If you have built up traffic on a free blog, and  then change over to your own domain, you’ll be starting all over.  Some of your traffic will follow you, but I guarantee you will lose 75% of your established traffic. This is extremely important!

2) Free blogging programs will not allow much advertising, and that is how you make your money. Eventually, if you do much advertising, your free blog host will kick you off. That’s not good! It can be devastating to what you have built up AND take tons of time to make the change. Google’s Blogger has been know to shut down a blog without notice, never to be seen again-ALL is lost! Don’t let that happen to you!

You can get a domain for under $10 at many good companies, and hosting for under $10/month. If you still can’t afford hosting right away, at least get a domain name and you can use that at one of the free accounts above. You can get hosting at One & One for $4/month and it includes one free domain. They also have 24/7 support to walk you through any problems you might have. It’s the best deal we’ve found. We use their business hosting and have been very happy with it.

Get Educated

The best way to learn profitable blogging is to learn from the best bloggers. Do a search on the top 100 (Christian) blogs, or ‘how to succeed at blogging’, and read, read, read. The top considered authority in the blogging field is Darren Rowse at ProBlogger. I recommend his book (ProBlogger: Secrets for Blogging Your Way to a Six-Figure Income ), but you could learn everything you know reading his blog.

Getting Traffic

It’s a no-brainer that Traffic = Money, whether it’s a blog or a website. Hopefully, we’ll be adding an entire section on improving traffic, because it’s one of the most important factors in a profitable blog. But for now, here is an excellent, easy to do, list of 54 things you can do to get traffic to your blog:

Seth Godin’s 54 Ways To Get Traffic

That should keep you busy for awhile. Happy blogging!
